One of the biggest storylines involving the Green Bay Packers this offseason has been their ongoing situation with two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander. In 2023, Alexander was coming off of his second Pro Bowl (and second Second Team All-Pro) season with the expectation that he would continue to be one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.
And he was. When he was healthy, which, unfortunately, was not often. On top of his injury issues, his demeanor in the locker room and with the media, as well as on the field before Green Bay’s Week 17 game in Carolina, led to a one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team.
But the Packers and Alexander put that all behind them and were in a good place moving forward into 2024. Or so they thought.
2024 Was a Disaster for the Green Bay Packers and Jaire Alexander

After playing in just seven games in 2023, everyone hoped that 2024 would mean a fresh start for Alexander and the team. For the first few weeks, at least, it seemed to be that way, too. He had two interceptions in the first three games of the season, including his first career pick six.
But then the injuries started popping up again. Alexander missed two games early in the season with a groin injury, but still remained an incredible defender when on the field.
In Week Eight, though, he tore his PCL and, despite eventually being able to be a full participant in practices, never appeared in a game beside 10 snaps in Week 11 against the Chicago Bears, a game in which he pulled himself out.
At the end of the year, Green Bay announced that he would have surgery on his knee and not play in the postseason. When Alexander met with reporters following the Packers’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round, he told them he had nothing good to say and wasn’t sure if he would be back in 2025.
Money Has Kept the Green Bay Packers from Trading Jaire Alexander

USA TODAY NETWORK-WISCONSIN
Alexander’s comments after the season, as well as Green Bay’s frustration with his inability or refusal to play, led to the team attempting to trade him this offseason. And while many fans supported this decision, others did not want that to happen because the Packers are a better team with him on the field (which is true).
Obviously, Green Bay has not traded Alexander, and there is a good reason for that: money. According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated:
“He’s due $17.5 million this year. And, because of his recent injury history, that’s shown to be a bit rich for interested teams. Alexander, meanwhile, would rather be cut so he can pick his destination, and he might not be willing to help with a contract adjustment to facilitate a trade.
“I would think, at this point, the most likely scenario is that he’s back on a reduced contract that has incentives. We’ll see.”
This supports the buzz that is has been coming out of Green Bay lately regarding the situation. Matt LaFleur and Brian Gutekunst have relied on the company line of “we’re working through it” for the vast majority of this offseason.
And it appears that the result will be a reunion for what likely will be Alexander’s final year with the Packers.
