The Green Bay Packers appear to have created a formula when it comes to drafting the successor to their long-time starting quarterbacks. Aaron Rodgers, of course, sat behind Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre for three seasons before taking over in 2008. Similarly, Jordan Love waited three seasons after he was selected by Green Bay to take over for Rodgers.
However, while Rodgers was the Packers’ primary backup quarterback in each of his first three NFL seasons, Love was not the team’s backup during his rookie season. Even though he was a first round pick and a player Green Bay traded up to get, he spent the 2020 NFL season on the practice squad. It was not until 2021, his second year, that he was put on the 53-man roster.
Tim Boyle Was the Green Bay Packers Backup Quarterback for Two Years

Tim Boyle signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent following the 2018 NFL Draft. He spent the 2018 season on the practice squad, sitting behind Rodgers and DeShone Kizer on the depth chart.
But in 2019, despite the fact that he had absolutely no track record of success to speak of, Boyle was named Rodgers’ backup. While in college at Connecticut, Boyle appeared in 24 games across three seasons. He threw one touchdown pass and 13 interceptions.
And in 2020, with Love in tow, the Packers named Boyle the primary backup quarterback again. Their newly drafted first round quarterback was still raw and needed a lot of work on his mechanics and footwork before the team felt comfortable moving him up the depth chart.
In 2021, though, it was time to promote Love off the practice squad, which meant Boyle was out of a job.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Tim Boyle Might Be Moving on Again Soon

Since leaving Green Bay, Boyle has seen regular season game action with the Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, and New York Giants. He has a career completion percentage of 60.5% to go with five touchdown passes and 13 interceptions.
In addition to these teams, Boyle has also been signed to the practice squads of the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans.
It is the Titans with whom he is playing now as he fights for a roster spot behind top overall pick Cam Ward. And it does not sound like he is winning that fight.
“Cam Ward was clearly the best QB on the field during spring practice, and Will Levis was clearly the best of the rest,” Easton Freeze of A to Z Sports wrote. “He was comfortably in a tier of his own above both of the Titans’ cheap free agent additions, Brandon Allen and Tim Boyle. Neither QB inspired any confidence when they were signed and neither did anything to change that at OTAs. I still think they’ll find a way to move Levis eventually, meaning one of these two (almost certainly Allen, if you ask me) will be the Titans primary backup to Cam Ward.”
If/when Boyle gets cut by Tennessee, it will not be surprising to see him land a job somewhere else. Teams appreciate his professionalism and work ethic.
Unfortunately, the talent just is not there to keep him on a regular 53-man roster.
