After months and months of conjecture, the Green Bay Packers have made a final decision regarding the future of two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Alexander is going to be released by Green Bay after the two sides could not come to agreement on a revised contract:

Prior to this recent development, the Packers had tried to trade Alexander early in the offseason. However, they were not able to find a trade partner, which led the team to explore a possible contract restructure. The two-time Pro Bowler even made it known that he would attend mandatory minicamp even if an agreement had not been reached at that point.
Obviously, talks did not go anywhere and Green Bay decided to release him before mandatory minicamp even started.
Why Are the Green Bay Packers Releasing Jaire Alexander?

The news that the Packers plan to release Alexander was met by a flurry of surprised and disappointed responses by fans. After all, when healthy, he is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.
But the key phrase there is “when healthy.”
As fans who have followed Green Bay know, it has been a struggle for Alexander to remain on the field. Ever since he signed his second contract, one that made him the highest paid cornerback in the league at the time, Alexander has missed just as many games as he as played.
Over the past four seasons, he has played in 34 of a possible 68 games. And while this is far less than ideal, his health over the last two seasons has been even more concerning. Alexander played just seven games in each of 2023 and 2024, meaning he suited up for 14 out of a possible 34 games.
Undoubtedly, his one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team late in the 2023 season will be discussed at length now that the Packers are releasing him. However, it should be noted that both Alexander and the Packers put that incident behind them long ago.
This recent disagreement is the result of his injury history and inability to stay on the field. Last season, the two sides feuded over how to treat his torn PCL. Despite the fact that he was able to practice fully late in the year, he did not suit up for games. At the very end of the year, it was announced that he was going to have surgery on his knee.
And, of course, Alexander’s comments at the end of season media session with players in the locker room will be discussed as well. It was there that he told reporters that he had “nothing good to say” and that he didn’t know if he would be back with the team in 2025.
As it turns out, he is not.
