Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been one of the biggest storylines of the 2025 NFL offseason. Earlier this year, he was released after two disappointing seasons with the New York Jets and became a free agent for the first time in his 20-year career.
Following his release, Rodgers did not see many teams express their interest in signing him. In fact, the Minnesota Vikings, his former NFC North rival, turned down his offer to play for them for one year while he helped mentor their young quarterback, 2024 first round pick JJ McCarthy.
The only team that has shown any real interest in signing the four-time NFL MVP is the Pittsburgh Steelers. For his part, Rodgers certainly seems intrigued by the idea, having already met with team officials. Additionally, he worked out with Steelers Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf earlier this spring.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Has Not Made a Decision on His NFL Future

Obviously, the only team that Rodgers will play for in 2025 is Pittsburgh as they are the only team that is willing to sign him. And they sure could use him. Currently, the Steelers have Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson, and 2025 sixth-round pick Will Howard on their roster at the quarterback position.
Indeed, it certainly seems as if Pittsburgh put all of their eggs in Rodgers’ basket when it comes to the position.
However, as has been the case every offseason for the past few years, retirement is a real option for Rodgers. In 2023, he tore his Achilles and missed the entire season, and followed that up with his worst statistical full year in 2024.
But on top of his own physical ailments, Rodgers recently revealed that multiple people close to him are battling cancer. His desire to be there for them has kept him from focusing on himself and his football future.
Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur Believes Aaron Rodgers Will Sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers

There are, of course, very few people who know exactly what Rodgers is thinking and feeling in regard to his future. His former coach in Green Bay, though, has a strong feeling he will be facing his former quarterback in 2025.
Matt LaFleur told Kay Adams this week, “I’m pretty sure they [the Steelers] know what they’re doing. I’m sure they’re confident in what they’re doing. And I would fully expect him [Rodgers] to be a Pittsburgh Steeler.”
