There are few names as synonymous with the Green Bay Packers than that of their legendary quarterback, Bart Starr. The Pro Football Hall of Famer, who also served as the team’s head coach from 1975 to 1983, left an undeniable mark on the franchise and the state of Wisconsin as a whole.

Throughout his life, Starr was a powerful figure in Wisconsin, Alabama, and around the country. Well-respected for his philanthropy as well as his Hall of Fame play on the field, Starr’s word went a long way. This is true of politics, in particular.

Throughout his lifetime, Starr regularly endorsed Republican candidates for political office. While he did not make a presidential endorsement in 2016, he did endorse Mitt Romney for President of the United States in 2012. He also regularly endorsed GOP candidates for governor in both Wisconsin and Alabama.

Starr, unfortunately, passed away in 2019. His wife, Cherry Starr, passed away in February of this year. Their son, Bart Starr Jr., has been carrying on their legacies ever since.

According to WBAY2 in Green Bay, Starr Jr. is doing something that neither he nor his father have ever done before: endorsing a Democrat for President of the United States.

When explaining why he is supporting Kamala Harris, Starr Jr. pointed to the life lessons he and his father learned from legendary Packers head coach Vince Lombardi.

“There is a point where silence among people such as myself is assent. We can not do that anymore,” he said. Starr Jr. recalled a time when his father drove an injured player to Lombardi’s house:

“When we got done he said ‘Son, did you recognize something?’ He said not one time did Lombardi talk about himself. He said, in fact, when he talks to us, he said, our priorities need to be God, family, and the Green Bay Packers. Never did he demand loyalty to himself. Think about the contrast between that and former President Trump.”

He continued, “This state, Wisconsin, among all states in the Midwest, we cannot afford a potential trade war because the individuals who will get hurt worse than anybody else will be farmers. We cannot overlook what happened on January 6th, and we for sure can’t overlook what’s been threatened to take place right now, the use of military force against citizens who disagree with him politically. We are all Americans. We are supposed to love and cherish differences of opinion.”

Knowing what we do about Starr’s father, he likely would have made a similar endorsement.
