The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering the final year of George Pickens’ rookie deal and have made it clear they want him to stay long term. Even after trading for DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks, they held on to Pickens during the draft—just barely—and continue to emphasize that he remains part of their plans for the upcoming season.
While general manager Omar Khan insists George Pickens isn’t going anywhere, the wide receiver may be thinking differently. According to Steelers Depot, Pickens reportedly considered requesting a trade earlier this offseason.

“We’re glad we have George and DK [Metcalf] here, I think they’re going to be exciting for everyone to watch. Excited to have DK here,” said the Steelers general manager.
During the NFL Draft, reports surfaced that the Steelers explored potential trades involving George Pickens, even holding discussions with teams like the Dallas Cowboys. However, nothing came of those talks, and for now, it seems they’ve been put on hold.
George Pickens with the Steelers

Had George Pickens followed through with a trade request, the Steelers likely would’ve tried to make it happen rather than keep a disgruntled player on the roster. With his rookie contract set to expire after the 2025 season and no extension expected before then, a move could have landed him on a team willing to commit long-term. It also might have given him the opportunity to be a clear-cut No. 1 option, instead of sharing the spotlight with newly acquired DK Metcalf.
On the other hand, teaming up with Metcalf could actually benefit Pickens. After serving as Pittsburgh’s go-to target the past two seasons, he’ll likely see fewer double teams, giving him more favorable matchups. With defenses forced to respect both wideouts, Pickens could thrive in a more balanced attack. Together, he and Metcalf have the tools to become one of the league’s top receiving duos.

George Pickens had a 1,000-yard receiving season for the Steelers in 2023. His numbers dipped in 2024, as he posted 900 yards receiving. The Steelers lost in the AFC Playoffs to the Baltimore Ravens this past year.
The Steelers committed significant money to Metcalf after acquiring him this offseason. Despite that move, Khan has dismissed speculation that the team plans to trade George Pickens. Whether that stance holds remains to be seen.
Steelers fans are eager for clarity on the George Pickens situation so the team can focus on building momentum for the 2025 season.
