Florida State football did not have the season they envisioned in 2024. Fresh off a 13-1 campaign and the addition of elite transfer portal quarterback prospect DJ Uiagalelei, the Florida State Seminoles sputtered out the gate, going 0-3 before finishing the season 2-10. Florida State scored just 15.4 points per game, the fourth-lowest average in the nation. With the Seminoles posting their worst record since the early 1970s, head coach Mike Norvell and the program have taken a step towards bolstering their roster.
On Monday, Norvell and Florida State football agreed to a restructured contract to benefit the Vision of Excellence initiative, a fundraising campaign to “help elevate the program’s standard.” With Florida State going a brutal 2-10 this season, fans did not feel sympathy for Norvell giving back $4.5 million of his salary.
Florida State Football Fans Unsympathetic With Mike Norvell
According to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports:
FSU coach Mike Norvell is contributing $4.5 million of his salary this year to the university in a restructured contract, sources tell @YahooSports.
It is the third such public move from a coach as schools brace for the era of athlete revenue sharing.
“I presented this to our administration in an effort to boost the support of our student-athletes while recognizing that the results and expectations need to be upheld to the highest level,” said Florida State football head coach Mike Norvell via the official team website. Norvell, who signed an eight-year, $84 million contract extension this offseason with FSU, will give back $4.5 of his salary on the eve of revenue sharing becoming legal in college football. NIL and new transfer portal rules have also significantly impacted the current college football landscape.
Norvell is 33-27 with Florida State, winning ACC Coach of the Year and the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award in 2023. The Seminoles will likely use a large portion of Norvell’s gifted salary in the transfer portal to replenish a roster that posted one of the worst seasons in program history. Nevertheless, Florida State football fans believe Norvell made the right move after an abysmal showing this season:
Just win bro.
