Fans continue to push back on the NFL and networks like ESPN for exclusively streaming games like the Monday Night Football matchup between the Arizona Cardinals and the Los Angeles Chargers.
In what might be the most unsuccessful exclusively-streamed NFL game yet, the NFL and ESPN tried to force fans to pay $11.99 to gain access to a second Monday Night Football game.
ESPN didn’t release the viewership numbers in their press release
ESPN did not announce the viewership numbers for the Cardinals-Chargers matchup, but they gladly boasted their numbers from the typical Monday Night Football game that was on the regular ESPN channel.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took on the Baltimore Ravens in a matchup that boasted a viewership of “more than 16 million.”
According to an article from Pro Football Talk, the viewership for the exclusively streamed game was 1.8 million.
“Nowadays, 1.8 million isn’t a bad number for a sporting event. It’s an awful number for an NFL game. And that’s why ESPN didn’t mention the audience numbers for Chargers-Cardinals,” Florio wrote.
Fans were ecstatic to see the failure of an exclusively-streamed NFL game as it gave them hope that there might be less of them in the future. On top of cable/Youtube TV and/or Sunday Ticket, fans need subscriptions to Peacock, Prime Video, Netflix, ESPN+ and NFL+ to watch every game this season.
Fans are fed up with exclusively-streamed games and the failure of this Monday’s version has them excited about the prospect of a different future.
