Monday, the Philadelphia Eagles officially traded edge rusher Bryce Huff to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a conditional fifth-round pick that could be upgraded to a fourth-round choice depending on Huff’s achievements with the 49ers.

    Eagle’s Reworking Bryce Huff’s Contract

Because Huff recently inked a three-year, $51 million contract with Philadelphia in 2024, he is now part of a 49ers defense hoping to recover after ending last season on a poor note. His one year in Philadelphia saw just 2.5 sacks, 13 total tackles and 5 tackles for loss in 12 games because of injury problems.

Actually, Bryce Huff was not in the Eagles’ lineup for the Super Bowl LIX win against the Chiefs because of an injury to his wrist. Even after the upset, the 49ers are banking on what he can do — especially knowing that his defensive coach is someone he has worked with before.

Huff will reunite with Robert Saleh, San Francisco’s new defensive coordinator and his former head coach with the New York Jets. Under Saleh’s watch in New York, Huff posted 10 sacks and 10 tackles in 2023 alone, part of his four-year total of 17.5 sacks as a Jet.

Some creative solutions were needed for dealing with the trade situation. Original plans showed Huff would be making $17 million this year, but he reorganized the deal to assist with his trade. ESPN reports that the Eagles will take on $9.05 million in salary and the 49ers will pay $7.95 million.

Since Huff didn’t perform as well as hoped while with the Eagles, his impressive stats and relationship with Saleh mean he could prove an effective pickup if he remains healthy. The Eagles are removing cap space to get better draft picks.

Such a transaction gives San Francisco a quick defensive lineman, while Huff gets the option to play for one of the top defenses in the league as his career starts to change.
