The recent appointment by President Donald Trump of Fox News host and former prosecutor Jeanine Pirro as interim U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., has sparked a measured but pointed response from sports commentator and media personality Stephen A. Smith.
Reacting on his podcast, The Stephen A. Smith Show, Smith acknowledged Pirro’s qualifications but raised concerns about what he perceives as a recurring theme in Trump’s administration—loyalty taking precedence over merit.
“Fealty to him, loyalty and devotion to him, seems to be the criteria for these jobs,” Smith said. “It is a bit alarming.”

Pirro, a longtime ally of Trump, has supported him since his 2016 campaign and even defended him during the Access Hollywood tape scandal. That level of allegiance, Smith argued, often appears to be the decisive factor in appointments.
“I’m not saying he should hire someone who hates him,” Smith clarified, “but the people he’s picking are folks that would say and do anything that appeals to him, and I don’t know how wise that is.”
Despite his concerns, Stephen A. Smith conceded that Pirro is indeed qualified, stressing that appointments should balance loyalty with experience and competence.
Stephen A. Smith Slams Biden’s “Responsibility” Claim for Donald Trump’s Re-Election
Stephen A. Smith didn’t hold back in criticizing former President Joe Biden for taking “responsibility” for Donald Trump’s re-election—a remark Biden made during a recent appearance on The View.
On his podcast, Smith flatly rejected the explanation, saying, “That’s straight BS,” in response to Biden’s suggestion that identity politics involving Kamala Harris contributed to Trump’s return to the White House.

“I’m not gonna let y’all get away with that,” Smith said. “Kamala Harris goes on The View knowing that you had open borders, knowing the crisis it caused in this country, knowing that there was an economy that compromised by inflation, knowing there was crimes in the streets… and she went on The View when they asked if there’s anything she would do differently… She said, ‘I really can’t think of anything.’ Everybody knows that when she said that, she sealed her fate.”
Smith, known for calling out both sides of the political aisle, emphasized that accountability—not blame-shifting—is what voters expect.
