By locking in arguably their most reliable offensive weapon, the Detroit Lions are extending David Montgomery’s contract for two more years. Now this deal guarantees David Montgomery to remain at the center of the Lions’ backfield for at least three more seasons at least through 2027, with $10.5 million guaranteed and $18.5 million total.

How It’s Been Going For David Montgomery
The Lions added David Montgomery before last season after he spent four years with the Chicago Bears, and he has been a vital part of Detroit’s rushing attack. In 18 games with the Lions, he has rushed for 1,286 yards on 276 carries for 4.6 yards per rush and 17 touchdowns. He is another perfect fit for the Lions system of someone who can grind out tough yards between the tackles to finish runs.
Dan Campbell has been impressed with Montgomery’s workhorse mentality and categorized him as a guy who can “He’s a guy that can finish games out for you. He sets the tone and gives you the tempo you need.” Montgomery provides the perfect physical counter to running back Jahmyr Gibbs’ speed and agility and makes up one of the most versatile backfields in the NFL.
Detroit’s rise to prominence has largely been a Montgomery-Gibbs duo, with the Lions becoming a serious NFC contender and no longer an after-thought. They’ve totaled over 2,200 rushing yards and 30 rushing scores in just 19 games, forcing defenses to say a prayer.
With the extension of David Montgomery, the Lions have also assured themselves that their offense will remain strong, balanced, year-in and year out. However, the Lions ensured that the key pieces of their offense will all continue to develop together for the foreseeable future, along with contract extensions for quarterback Jared Goff and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.
With his new deal, Montgomery is making it clear the Lions are serious about challenging for championships. In Week 6 the Lions dominated the Dallas Cowboys, 47-9, and once again, their dynamic offense is ready to come out and show what it’s got for seasons to come.
