The Detroit Lions need to address the receiver position because they lack a clear-cut number three wide receiver who is capable of stepping up in case of an emergency. Tim Patrick finished third at the position in receiving with 394 yards, while Kalif Raymond finished fourth with 215. Also, both have one year left on their respective deals and are up there in age; Patrick turns 32 in November, and Raymond turns 31 in August.

Because of this, the Lions could select their number three receiver of the future in the upcoming draft.
The Detroit Lions hosted a speedy receiver prospect

According to Ian Rapoport, the Lions hosted former Texas Longhorns wide receiver Matthew Golden for a Top-30 visit over the weekend. Golden showed off his blazing speed in late February, running a jaw-dropping 4.29 40-yard dash, the fastest by a wide receiver at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. He has recently risen on draft boards, and many analysts have mocked him as a first-round pick.

He had a great lone season with Texas

After spending the first two years of his college career with the Houston Cougars, Matthew Golden transferred to the Texas Longhorns for the 2024 season. Golden broke out during his junior season, boasting career highs in receptions, yards, and touchdowns while leading the offense in yards and touchdowns and finishing second in receptions. He hauled in 58 receptions for 987 yards and nine touchdowns in 16 games.
Here’s Lance Zierlein’s scouting report

“Golden works all three levels of the field with similar consistency and productivity. His route-running needs refinement, but he does a decent job of altering tempo and separating at break points. Golden has the ability to play all three receiver spots. He also has the agility and body control to turn near-misses into highlight catches.
“Focus drops still pepper his play, but he’s a willing participant in traffic and took command of contested catches with better physicality and catch strength in 2024. Golden’s starting-level traits and big leap forward as a go-to playmaker have him primed to become a productive catch-maker with the potential to develop into a WR1 in the future.”
He predicts that he will become a good starter within his first two years.
