Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson is currently recovering from a torn Achillies he suffered during the 2024 NFL season. Many are questioning if Watson will be the starting quarterback in Week 1 or not for Cleveland.

The Watson contract has not turned out as planned for the Browns. He is currently one of five quarterbacks on Cleveland’s roster. Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders, and Joe Flacco are the other four quarterbacks on the roster. It is going to be interesting to see which quarterbacks Cleveland will keep at the start of the 2025 NFL season. How is Watson progressing through his injury?
Positive Injury Update For Cleveland Browns Quarterback Deshaun Watson

Mary Kay Kabot of cleveland.com provided a positive update on Watson’s injury on Monday. She reported,
“While all of Browns Town is focused on the four-way quarterback competition, Deshaun Watson continues to make excellent progress in his comeback bid at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus.
Watson, not part of the derby among Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, Joe Flacco and Shedeur Sanders, has been throwing to Jerry Jeudy and David Bell indoors at the Browns’ facility, a league source told cleveland.com. He’s been out of his walking boot for several weeks, as he posted on his Instagram account, and also posted photos of himself Monday throwing to receivers.
Jeudy is participating in the Browns’ voluntary offseason program, and Bell is working his way back from surgery last season to repair his dislocated hip.”
Does this already signal the end of Watson in Cleveland despite the positive progress on his torn Achillies injury? Watson completed 63.4% of his passes for 1,148 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions. He last played on October 20 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The 29-year-old quarterback was one of a few quarterbacks to start for Cleveland last season when they finished with a 3-14 record. It appears as if the Browns are turning the clock and looking past Watson despite the injury progress. It appears as if Pickett or Flacco will win the starting job. There is also a chance that Cleveland will either cut Gabriel or Sanders.
Watson is still under contract for two more seasons. He is the middle of his five-year $230 million deal. However, it would cost Cleveland a lot of money if they decided to release him either this year or next year. They are better off putting him on injured reserve for the next two seasons before his contract expires.
