The Cleveland Browns finished with a 3-14 record during the 2024 NFL season. Cleveland had the second overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and they decided to trade down with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Dillon Gabriel (5) gets ready during day two of NFL rookie minicamp at the Cleveland Browns training facility on Saturday, May 10, 2025, in Berea, Ohio.

The Browns selected defensive tackle Mason Graham from the Michigan Wolverines with the fifth overall pick. That selection for Cleveland was not even the biggest story of the 2025 NFL Draft. Cleveland decided to draft two quarterbacks. They selected quarterback Dillon Gabriel from the Oregon Ducks in the third round and Shedeur Sanders from the Colorado Buffaloes in the fifth round. The quarterback battle for the Browns in training camp is going to get very interesting. What did someone have to say about the battle?

Rival QB Coach Comments On the Cleveland Browns Quarterback Situation

Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders (12) hands the ball off to Cleveland Browns running back Quinshon Judkins (10) during day two of NFL rookie minicamp at the Cleveland Browns training facility on Saturday, May 10, 2025, in Berea, Ohio.

For the moment, Cleveland is currently carrying five quarterbacks on the roster. Deshaun Watson, Kenny Pickett, and Joe Flacco are the other three quarterbacks on the roster to go along with the two rookies.

However, one rival quarterbacks coach commented on the current by saying,

“It’s an absolute mess,” a rival NFL quarterbacks coach tells Matt Lombardo of Between The Hashmarks, of the Browns’ situation, on the condition of anonymity to speak freely. “It’s not shocking with that place.”

“I would assume Flacco starts Week 1,” the coach tells me. “With Kenny Pickett as the backup. Here’s the problem; one of the young guys has to go. But, they won’t do that.
“If I were running the show there, I’d somehow get rid of Pickett. Not saying it’s the right thing to do, but I know that organization. They could f* up a free lunch.””
These are some harsh comments from the rival quarterbacks coach about the Browns. Flacco and Pickett being one and two would not be a surprise. Watson is going to be out of the picture most likely for Cleveland. That would mean that Gabriel or Sanders should be the odd man out.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry may want to keep Gabriel around, but owner Jimmy Haslam may want Sanders around instead. It is going to be interesting to see what the Browns do in training camp with the quarterback battle.
The depth of the Browns quarterbacks is going to be the biggest headlines across the NFL. Flacco is a veteran, and he might be the best option for Cleveland in Week 1. However, Pickett or one of the rookies may take over for him later on in the season depending on how things could potentially progress in training camp and throughout the 2025 NFL regular season.
