The Dallas Cowboys reportedly had no interest in signing a star running back who wanted to join the team this offseason. The move seems a little curious for a team with the position as one of its glaring holes for the upcoming season after losing their starter, Tony Pollard, to the Tennessee Titans in free agency.
The Dallas Cowboys need an RB1 for the 2024 season
The Cowboys are expected to find a long-term solution at running back in the April draft. There have been reports that Ezekiel Elliott could return for the 2024 season after spending last season with the New England Patriots, following his release from Dallas in the last offseason.
Derrick Henry wanted to play for Dallas
The Cowboys could have had an upgrade in comparison to Elliott or Pollard with former Titans star Derrick Henry. Per Grant Gordon’s transcription on the NFL’s website, Henry, who signed with the Baltimore Ravens in free agency last month, said on The Pivot podcast his agent told him the Cowboys “weren’t really interested” in him. Henry thought the Cowboys would be a perfect situation for him in 2024:
“I knew once free agency started that I wanted to work something out [with the Ravens] if we could,” Henry said recently on The Pivot podcast. “Even though I’m living in Dallas and Dallas being a perfect situation, as well, because we lived there, we ain’t got to move.
But at the same time, Ravens, the history of it, and then talking to Ray (Lewis) at the Pro Bowl, his passion about the organization, his impact there and how he talked about it. I was like, man, if I’m not in Tennessee or I don’t get to go to Dallas, I’d love to be a Raven.”
Henry is happy to be in Baltimore
Henry said the Ravens are a “perfect spot” for him as he’ll get to work with a dynamic quarterback in Lamar Jackson. Henry has never had the opportunity to play with an elite quarterback. If the Cowboys wanted, he could have played with a top quarterback in Dark Prescott.
However, they weren’t all in for the backfield.
