The impending free agency of Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is already shaping up as one of the most interesting narratives in the NFL offeason. Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton might have added a little more to the drama to it when he was asked ahead of Super Bowl 58, which player, in his eyes, is “unfairly hated.” That’s when’s Mayfield’s name suddenly came out of the Broncos mentor.
“I’m sure that Baker [Mayfield] was one of them, then all of a sudden, you know what? The script flips, and then all of us are like, well, we love Baker now. Aren’t we, like I’m looking for Baker, like, where’s he at, he’s a free agent, you know?
At this point, it is fair to say that the Denver Bronco’s gamble with Russell Wilson is a colossal failure. The Broncos traded A LOT to the Seattle Seahawks for Wilson back in 2022 before inking him to a massive five-year contract extension worth 242.5 million, believing that there was enough juice in him to put Denver in serious Super Bowl contention in the years to come. Apparently, that’s not the case, as the Denver Broncos have won just a total of 13 games in two seasons to date with Wilson and zero playoff appearances.
Is Baker Mayfield The Savior The Denver Broncos Need?
With Wilson not working out with the Broncos, there is a need for the team for a quarterback. That’s unless the Broncos ultimately decides to keep going with Wilson — or put their trust in Jarrett Stidham. The offseason is an avenue for the Broncos to address their quarterback quandaries. It is unclear how much interest Payton and the Broncos actually have in pursuing Mayfield, but the former No. 1 overall draft pick has definitely rebuilt his image as a viable starter in the NFL after one season with the Bucs.
