The Houston Texans have two consecutive games to opponents who are set to play in the postseason next month. On Christmas Day, the Texans suffered a 31-2 blowout loss to the Baltimore Ravens in front of 71,544 fans at NRG Stadium in Houston.
The Texans were defeated 27-19 by the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday. While Houston looked competitive in Week 16, Wednesday’s loss to the Ravens exposed the Texans as a team that could be an early exit in the wild card round.
The Houston Texans don’t look like a playoff contender right now
Houston entered Week 17 having already clinched the AFC South. However, the Texans played more like a road team during the first round of the College Football Playoff on Friday and Saturday.
Against the Houston defense, Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson broke Michael Vick’s record for the NFL’s all-time leading rushing quarterback. Jackson ran four times for 87 yards, including a 48-yard rushing touchdown against the Texans.
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans looks outclassed against head coaches with teams who have winning records. Most of Houston’s wins have come against sub-.500 teams. Houston has lost to contenders like the Minnesota Vikings (34-7), Green Bay Packers (24-22), and Detroit Lions (26-23).
Following Wednesday’s loss, Texans star defensive lineman Danielle Hunter called on the coaching staff to have a better game plan in future weeks.
Fans turning on DeMeco Ryans
Ryans was a fan favorite for how he helped turn around Houston’s franchise in 2023, but fans on social media are starting to turn on the second-year head coach for the team’s recent performances.
“DeMeco Ryans on Fraud Alert,” wrote a fan.
“demeco ryans is the biggest fraud in the league,” posted another.
“Demeco Ryans is a BAD coach. You go for that. 22 yard punt and give Lamar 1:11 and 3 timeouts,” wrote a fan.
“Is Demeco Ryans a bad coach? Why on earth do you punt there,” asked a fan.
“Fire Demeco Ryans and hire Ben Johnson,” suggested another.
“The Houston Texans should seriously consider firing DeMeco Ryans CJ Stroud and that defense have been disgusting-and not in a good way,” wrote a fan.
