College football fans had harsh reactions following Sports Illustrated’s decision to award Deion Sanders as the 2023 “Sportsman of the Year” for his efforts to put the Colorado Buffaloes program on the map.
Sanders turned a 2022 Colorado team that hadn’t been to a bowl game in six years to a team in 2023 that hasn’t been to a bowl game in seven seasons. (Though the Buffaloes won three more games this fall than they did last year.)
Sanders has been a polarizing figure in football because of the way he talks about his players and the fact he has called himself the “best” coach in college football. But Colorado’s early wins captured much media attention the Buffaloes program hadn’t seen in decades.

I've always been a big fan of the man but …
Of all the champions and MVPs , winning coaches, fighters or boxers, Verstappen winning damn near all the races in his series, and so on…. Not one stood above? Lol

Is there a more hyped team in CFB history coming off a 4-8 season?

That’s embarrassing. Dude had a losing season. Hardly deserving of any award.

I would have my youth football players deported to Canada for going 4-8 and Deion is getting celebrated for it

Didn't beat one team with a winning record, went 1-8 in Conference play and finished the season losing 6 games in a row. Seems legit. pic.twitter.com/T3GtzHu5Bv
