Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders gets blasted by analyst and critic Jason Whitlock for his push to have his son’s jersey required by the program, despite criticism towards the idea.
In one of the recent episodes of his program “Fearless,” Jason Whitlock blasted college football coach Deion Sanders for pushing the jersey retirement of his son, Shedeur Sanders. According to him, the young Sanders lacks the experience, numbers, and overall career impact to have his jersey retired.
“Deion [Sanders] just got a new contract and part of the negotiation was my boy’s number gets retired as well and he gets to go down in history as I think he ranks maybe number seven on Colorado’s all-time passing list he’s right behind Joel Klatt,” Whitlock said.
“Shedeur Sanders and Dion Sanders, he’s making a mockery of Colorado,” he added. “Colorado’s won a national championship, they have great former players and this guy’s getting his number retired? Nobody’s going to wear #2 anymore at Colorado because this guy had a cup of coffee two years at Colorado and won 13 games and lost 12?”
“I saw this yesterday and I just fell out laughing.”
Deion Sanders has been coaching the Colorado Buffaloes since 2023, when he transitioned from Jackson State to take on the role of head coach. As of 2025, he has completed two seasons with the team.

Deion Sanders Wants Son’s Jersey Retired
Deion Sanders, the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, has been advocating for the retirement of his son Shedeur Sanders’ jersey number, as well as Travis Hunter’s, due to their remarkable contributions to the team.
Shedeur Sanders played for Colorado for two seasons, setting over 100 school records, including career passing touchdowns, passer rating, and completion percentage. He threw for 7,364 yards, 64 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions during his time with the Buffaloes.

Travis Hunter also played for Colorado for two seasons, excelling as both a wide receiver and cornerback. He recorded 153 catches for 1,989 yards and 21 touchdowns on offense, while contributing 67 tackles, 7 interceptions, and 16 pass breakups on defense.
Fans and analysts argue that this decision is premature, given Sanders’ two-year tenure at Colorado and the team’s lack of conference championships or bowl game victories during his time.

Some critics believe the move is more about honoring his father, head coach Deion Sanders, than recognizing Shedeur’s on-field achievements. Despite the backlash, supporters highlight Sanders’ record-breaking stats and his role in revitalizing Colorado’s football program.
