For a team on a seven-season losing streak, the Colorado football program remains one of the most polarizing in the country. Fresh off a 4-8 season last year, the Buffaloes, under the tutelage of head coach Deion Sanders, will head into the Big 12 next fall, their home from 1948 to 2010. With Big 12 Media Days ending on Wednesday, coach Sanders finally spoke to the media, quickly cultivating headlines with the 2024 season approaching.
Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders: Speaks On State of Buffaloes Heading into Next Fall

Despite their record, the Colorado Buffaloes will likely be must-watch TV every week next season. Led by coach Deion Sanders, his son and quarterback Shedeur Sanders, and two-way superstar Travis Hunter, Colorado routinely finds themselves in the spotlight weekly. Last year, the first under coach Sanders, was no exception, with numerous national media outlets dissecting every win and loss from the Buffaloes for the entirety of the season. Nevertheless, the elder Sanders believes he is held to a different standard than his peers on the FBS level.
Deion Sanders doesn’t like to talk about culture with a program but he did talk about the process at Colorado and the expectations he has for the Buffs at Big 12 Media Days.

“I’m judged on a different scale. My wins are totally different than your wins. Your wins; you just judging football. That’s why I have to start by giving you education, academics, and so forth. I have to give you those things so you understand there is a greater scope. I can’t win nine games, and our GPA suffers. Our GPA can’t be high but we lose another eight games. We can’t not go and grab high school players, and you got a bunch of guys out of the portal getting incarcerated. My wins are different. We have to win in every area. That’s the way we are judged, and I’m cool with that.”
Sanders highlighted that his presence in Colorado has led to the team being over-analyzed in every facet of the game, including academics. However, the frontman reiterated he is “cool” with the added pressure, something he believes he has had since his college playing days with the Florida State Seminoles in 1985.
Sanders: Praises Travis Hunter, Excited For 2024 Campaign

Deion Sanders, aka Coach Prime, will enter his second year with the Colorado football program next fall. Despite last season’s poor 4-8 finish, two-way player Travis Hunter earned All-American honors after a 57-catch, three-interception campaign. Sanders remains bullish on Hunter heading into his second year in Boulder, Colorado.
“He’s something we haven’t seen in college football. Charles Woodson was HIM, Champ Bailey was HIM, those guys are unbelievable… but (Travis) he’s the best WR in college football, and he’s the best CB in college football.”
In nine games, Hunter recorded 57 receptions, 721 yards, and five touchdowns, highlighted by an 11-reception, 119-yard effort in the season opener against the TCU Horned Frogs. Hunter also recorded an interception in the win. Defensively, he finished the 2023 season with 30 tackles, five passes defended, three interceptions, and two TFLs
Sanders is also excited about his second year with the Buffaloes, saying, “I see the want and fire and desire from our young men, and I can’t wait until you get the opportunity to see it as well. So I am very optimistic about what we have.”
