General manager John Lynch and the San Francisco 49ers have been among the more boldly aggressive teams at the NFL trade deadline in recent years.
Last fall, it was the 49ers who acquired Chase Young in hopes of beefing up an already dominant pass rush with the thought added depth could propel San Francisco to the Super Bowl.
Meanwhile, the year prior Lynch landed Christian McCaffrey and dropped him into Kyle Shanahan’s offense as an ideal scheme fit who has now played his way into the MVP conversation the past two seasons.
So, this season, just over one month from the NFL trade deadline, it isn’t surprising that the 49ers have been among the teams linked to acquiring All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams, who requested a trade this week from the Las Vegas Raiders.
San Francisco 49ers’ John Lynch Breaks Silence on Davante Adams Trade Rumors
Given that rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall remains sidelined and on injured reserve while recovering from a gunshot wound and Deebo Samuel is on the shelf dealing with a hamstring injury, the overtly-aggressive 49ers make some sense as a landing spot for Adams.
However, Lynch refused to tip his hand when asked about the possibility of San Francisco dealing for Adams.
“Shoot, we like our group,” Lynch said Friday on his weekly segment on KNBR 680-AM. “Davante is a hell of a player. One thing we’ve shown is we’re always looking, we’re never afraid to look and see what’s out there. We’re never afraid to pull the trigger.
“Coming in this year, we feel our roster is in pretty good spot,” Lynch continued. “We have endured some injuries. But we will never say never, but it’s got to work for both sides. It’s got to work for us. I’m not going to comment on any specific player but we like where our roster is at.”
Adams would certainly elevate the 49ers’ receiving corps, or at minimum make it even more explosive. Through the first four weeks of this season, the 31-year-old has caught 18 passes for 209 yards with a touchdown.
Trading for Adams is a move straight from Lynch’s playbook, but time will tell if San Francisco gets seriously involved in this sweepstakes or turns their attention elsewhere ahead of the deadline.
