The New York Jets are going all-in on quarterback Aaron Rodgers, adding a superstar wide receiver to the former MVP quarterback’s repertoire.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Jets are finalizing a trade to acquire All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders, in exchange for a conditional third-round draft choice.
Tuesday’s trade brings months of breathless speculation over Adams’ future to a close. Adams’ tenure with the Raiders took a turn when Las Vegas wound up benching quarterback Gardner Minshew, in favor of Aidan O’Connell.
The Raiders had previously been reported to be asking for a second-round pick in return for Adams, but the price the Jets paid can become a second-rounder, if Adams meets various performance and playing time incentives, according to Rapoport.
Adams had previously requested a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders, and now reunites with Rodgers, whom spent the first eight seasons of his career catching passes from with the Green Bay Packers.
What Davante Adams Landing with New York Jets Means for NFL Playoff Race
The Jets wound up winning what had been a robust sweepstakes for Adams’ services, after the receiver had been previously linked to AFC contenders such as the Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills, who were both hoping to drop the playmaker into their offense to buttress their playoff hopes.
Now in New York, Adams joins the likes of Mike Williams, Garrett Wilson, and Allen Lazard in one of the deepest receiving corps in the league.
The Jets are clearly hoping that Adams’ presence can elevate Rodgers, who has been in the midst of a wildly inconsistent start to the season, while losing two consecutive games to the Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills.
New York is currently just 2-4, and has significant ground to make up after losing to the Bills on Monday night.
However, after firing head coach Robert Saleh last week and now trading for Adams, it is clear that the Jets are intent on doing everything possible to make a playoff push around Rodgers, this season.
