Darren Waller’s jaw-dropping trade to Miami Dolphins from the New York Giants has brought on some pretty absurd and funny reactions since its announcement, especially since the tight end retired after the 2023 NFL season. After trading away tight end Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Dolphins decided to bring in Waller, who has apparently come out of retirement.
The trade definitely did not sit well with many Miami fans, who felt that the team was doing a major disservice by giving away Jonnu Smith and bringing in a retired NFL player. Dallas Cowboys fan-boy Marcus Mosher had a hot take on this one and tweeted his reaction through his X account.
“Trading for a retired player is hilarious. But also awesome.” Marcus Mosher tweeted from his X account about Darren Waller going to the Miami Dolphins.

The Miami Dolphins have been pretty busy over the last couple of days. First, they traded away cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers in return for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, and now this.

Miami fans will also be comparing the tight end that their team let go of and the one they have freshly brought in. Smith, in the 2024 NFL season, managed 88 receptions, scoring eight touchdowns for the team. In contrast, Waller managed only one touchdown for the New York Giants before he announced his retirement from the league.

Darren Waller Retired Because Of A Health Scare
Darren Waller was one of New York’s finest players before he decided to retire. His decision to do so did not come as a result of an injury or even a decline in performance but because of a health scare. In late 2023, Waller almost lost consciousness because of his breathing issues, for which he had to be hospitalized. After this health scare, Waller decided to retire from playing football and instead focus on his rap career.

Waller did release a few songs and even dipped his toe into sports broadcasting. After taking some time off to re-focus on his health and change his approach to performance, Waller reached out to the New York Giants, announcing his interest in getting back to playing. Little did he expect to be traded into the Miami Dolphins as their tight end for the 2025 NFL season. Waller and the Dolphins will be seen in action for the very first time with a matchup against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1.
