The NFL trade deadline is fast approaching and teams around the league are scrambling to get the best deal possible. As it stands, the Dallas Cowboys is projected to be the franchise that needs to be the most active before the said deadline passes.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones recently addressed the team’s potential for making a significant trade before the NFL deadline. With the Cowboys struggling at a 2-2 record, following tough losses to the New Orleans Saints and Baltimore Ravens, the urgency for improvement is palpable. The injuries affecting key players like Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence have raised questions about the team’s depth.
During an interview on 105.3 The Fan, Jones suggested that while trades are possible, they are not typically planned for this stage of the season. He emphasized the importance of preparing for injuries during the offseason and building depth across various positions. This approach indicates a cautious strategy rather than a reactive one, despite the pressing need for reinforcements.
One player frequently linked to the Cowboys is wide receiver Davante Adams. However, head coach Mike McCarthy has already dismissed the idea of acquiring Adams, and reports suggest that Jones is hesitant to invest heavily in a new contract for the star receiver. This reluctance complicates any hopes of adding a marquee player to the roster.
ESPN’s Dan Graziano Explains Why Dallas Cowboys Must Be Active Before NFL Trade Deadline Expires
Among all the teams out there, the Cowboys need to be active players before the trade deadline expires. According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, there’s a pretty good reason why the Dak Prescott-led-franchise has to do so.
Graziano: It wouldn’t fit with anything we know about them and the way they operate, but I think the Cowboys should be looking for running backs and defensive front-seven players. They should be in the Haason Reddick market, for example (though again, I would be shocked if they actually were).
Playing without defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence for a month or two is going to hurt them, especially if edge rusher Micah Parsons’ absence is also an extended one. Running back is an easy one, though the Cowboys seem to have spent this offseason making a point of not pursuing anyone at that position.
They just can’t afford to lose any more ground in the division race. Given the Rashee Rice injury, it would’ve been easy to say Chiefs here, but Kansas City has shown it knows how to win with what it has. The Cowboys feel like they need more.
As the trade deadline approaches early next month, the Cowboys face a critical decision-making period. While the team has the potential for significant moves, it appears that management is leaning towards maintaining the current roster and focusing on player development and recovery.
With the right adjustments, the Cowboys hope to navigate their challenges and improve their standing as they head deeper into the season. If they make the right move before the deadline, the team can change their narrative for the better.
