The Dallas Cowboys suffered their worst loss of the season at the hands of Detroit Lions in Week 6. The kicker here is that this occurred on the same day team owner Jerry Jones celebrated his birthday.
In a disappointing outing, the Cowboys faced a crushing 47-9 defeat against the Lions, marking their worst home loss in AT&T Stadium history. The Cowboys, missing key defensive starters, struggled against a dominant Lions team that controlled the game from start to finish.
Quarterback Jared Goff thrived against Dallas’s defense, completing 72% of his passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns without any interceptions, achieving a stellar passer rating of 153.8. The Lions’ ground game also excelled, with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs combining for 143 rushing yards, helping Detroit total 184 yards on the ground.
Despite starting strong with a field goal, the Cowboys quickly fell behind as Goff led a scoring drive capped by a touchdown run from Montgomery. Dallas’s offense faltered, with Dak Prescott under constant pressure, resulting in four sacks and two interceptions. The Cowboys’ rushing attack was nearly nonexistent, accumulating just 36 yards throughout the game.
The second half saw the Lions continue to dominate, scoring quickly and extending their lead to 34-6 by the end of the third quarter. The Cowboys managed only two field goals in the game, unable to convert their opportunities into touchdowns.
By the final quarter, the score had ballooned to 47-9, showcasing the Lions’ complete control. As the Cowboys enter their bye week with a 3-3 record, they face pressing questions about their performance and the need for improvement ahead of their next matchup.
Dallas Cowboys Owners Jerry Jones Receives Most Awful Birthday Gift After Week 6 Loss to Houston Texans
The Cowboys’ humiliating loss coincided with Jones’ birthday, making their recent match more disastrous. According to a tweet shared by ESPN Stats & Info, the team’s defeat just made franchise history.
“The home struggles continued for the Cowboys Sunday with a 47-9 loss to the Lions.
It was their largest home loss ever under Jerry Jones (since 1989) and it happened on Jones’ 82nd birthday.
Dating back to the playoffs, Dallas has allowed 167 points over its last 4 home games, the 3rd-most in a span of 4 home games in NFL history, including playoffs,” ESPN Stats & Info tweeted.
Following the Cowboys’ loss to Detroit, Jones expressed his deep disappointment, calling the game very humbling. He highlighted the impressive physicality of the Lions, recognizing them as a team to emulate.
While concerns about potential coaching changes lingered, Jones dismissed any immediate thoughts of making a move regarding head coach Mike McCarthy. As the Cowboys head into their bye week, the focus remains on addressing the team’s shortcomings and regaining momentum in the NFC East standings.
