Tony Romo played his whole 13-year NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys, but he failed to win a Super Bowl with the team and had to retire ringless. Now, Jerry Jones doesn’t want that to happen to Dak Prescott.
The Cowboys’ Super Bowl hopes came alive once again in Week 14 after the team took down last year’s finalists, the Philadelphia Eagles, in dominant fashion. Prescott threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns as America’s Team blew out Philly 33-13.
With the victory, the Cowboys improved to 10-3 on the season and claimed the top spot in the NFC East. Dallas has a good chance to win the NFC as well, since they are currently on a three-way tie with the San Francisco 49ers and Eagles–with the Niners ahead in the standings by virtue of their head-to-head record this 2023 season.
As reporters asked Jones about their Super Bowl aspirations, he couldn’t help but look back at their failure to win one when Romo was still with them. The legendary QB played for Dallas from 2004 to 2016, but while he achieved Pro Bowl status four times during that span, he never had much postseason success.
Jones shared that it’s one of his biggest regrets and disappointments, and he doesn’t want Prescott to suffer the same fate.
“Dak is a player who is qualified in every way to have a Super Bowl in his career,” Jerry Jones said as he noted he would be equally disappointed for Dak Prescott if they don’t win a Super Bowl while he’s their quarterback, per Jon Machota of The Athletic.
If Prescott continues his MVP play, however, it’s not hard to see the Cowboys fulfilling Jones’ goal.
Can the Cowboys Break Their Super Bowl Drought?
It won’t be easy for the Cowboys to make it to the Super Bowl, however. After all, they have tried numerous times and failed big time.
For one, the Cowboys have not made it to the Super Bowl since 1995. After winning the title back then, they haven’t even made it past the Divisional Round.
Last season, they made it through the Wild Card round after beating Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, they once again fell in the Divisional Round, succumbing to the San Francisco 49ers in a tight 19-12 game.
After such a long history of losing, it is difficult to get past that. However, there’s no denying that the Cowboys have a good chance this 2023 as they continue to play incredible defense along with a solid offense led by Dak Prescott.
Maybe this could very well be the year that Jerry Jones is waiting for after nearly three decades of waiting for another title.
