The Dallas Cowboys will have a new backup quarterback in 2025. After five seasons serving as the backup signal-caller for Dallas, Cooper Rush will don the purple and gold next season as a member of the Baltimore Ravens. On Thursday, Dallas made a trade acquisition for 2024 sixth-round draft selection and dual-threat quarterback Joe Milton.
Alongside journeyman passer Will Grier, Milton will sit behind a healthy Dak Prescott as the latter recovers from a season-ending hamstring injury suffered last year. However, although Milton only cost Dallas a late-round pick swap, some believe he can push Prescott, the longest-tenured Cowboy on the roster, for the starting position. Former superstar NFL running back LeSean McCoy believes it won’t be long until Milton becomes the team leader on offense.
Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott In Media’s Crosshairs

According to LeSean McCoy on FS1’s The Facility:
“Dak Prescott, find a realtor. Because Joe Milton can play.”

“Listen. If Dak Prescott has a postseason like he always had, going into next year, Dak, find a realtor. Joe Milton has got talent. He can play. I have seen other quarterbacks get paid a lot of money, and they move on from it,” said McCoy during a segment on FS1’s The Facility on Tuesday. The Dallas Cowboys acquired Milton on Thursday via trade and will open the season behind Prescott in the quarterback position.
Despite finishing the 2024 season as the MVP runner-up and throwing 213 touchdowns against 82 picks in his nine-year NFL career, McCoy points at Prescott’s postseason shortcomings as a reason for a quarterback controversy developing sooner rather than later. Dallas is just 2-5 in the playoffs with Prescott as their starter, with the Mississippi State product tossing 14 touchdowns to seven interceptions. Meanwhile, Milton went 22-of-29 for 241 yards and a touchdown last season as a rookie. He also added 16 yards and a score via the ground and entered the league as an intriguing prospect for his elite dual-threat ability.
