The Seattle Seahawks are at a relatively awkward moment in time for the franchise. Geno Smith is the quarterback for now, but he has not been a consistent franchise quarterback. However, the franchise just signed him to a three-year, $75 million contract in the offseason to keep him from going elsewhere.
While the team could decide to simply stick with Smith, that doesn’t seem to be the best option for getting back into contention in the NFC. Instead, they could be stuck with Smith as their backup should they add a more talented quarterback.
Some believe they could start looking for a new quarterback this coming offseason. Among the potential options that have been linked to them is Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields.
Could The Seahawks Be A Trade Suitor For Justin Fields?
NFL insider Matt Lombardo recently connected the Seahawks as a team that would make sense as a Fields trade suitor. He broke down why he believes the two parties could be a good fit together.
“Similarly to Tampa Bay, the Seahawks might be a Fields away from legitimately challenging the San Francisco 49ers for NFC West supremacy,” writes Lombardo. “The Seahawks could turn the clock back with Fields and add a quarterback whom the young playmakers on offense can grow and win with well into the future.”
Fields would certainly be an intriguing option for the Seahawks. He is a similar player to Smith, but is a much better option both now and long-term.
This season, Fields has struggled with injury issues, but has not looked bad when he’s been on the field. However, he has failed to live up to the hype that surrounding him before the season.
In eight games played, Fields has completed 64.4 percent of his pass attempts for 1,587 yards, 12 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He has also racked up 400 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Those numbers aren’t horrible, but there is definitely room for improvement.
Smith, on the other hand, has completed 64.4 percent of his passes for 2,918 yards, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He has 92 yards and a touchdown on the ground himself.
Moving on from Smith to Fields would be a massive decision for the Seahawks. It’s likely they would look to trade Smith, but that could be difficult with the new contract they gave him.
Only time will tell what the Seahawks do at the quarterback position, but they’re certainly going to be an intriguing team to keep an eye on this offseason.
