The media picked the Colorado football team to finish near the bottom of the Big 12 this offseason. However, in their first season back in the Big 12, Colorado went 9-3 to close the regular season, narrowly missing the conference title and finishing in the AP Poll Top 25. The Colorado Buffaloes more than doubled their win total from last year and are just two years removed from a disastrous 1-11 record.

On Thursday, the Big 12 released their annual award winners, with Colorado football earning four first-team all-conference selections and a conference player of the year pick. Notably, two-way superstar Travis Hunter won Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, first-team Big 12 on offense, and first-team Big-12 on defense. Yet, despite his unprecedented season, college football fans bashed the Big 12 for supposedly catering to Colorado and head coach Deion Sanders.

According to Ryan Koenigsberg of ALLCITY Network:

Travis Hunter: Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year

    First-Team Big 12 on offense

    First-Team Big 12 on defense

The Heisman race is an open and shut case.  #HE12MAN

On Thursday, Hunter earned three separate honors from the Big 12, highlighted by DPOY. Hunter had 32 tackles, four interceptions, and one TFL. He also led the conference with 11 passes defended. Hunter also earned first-team Big 12 on offense after a 1,100-receiving campaign. The future NFL first-round pick had 92 catches, 1,152 yards, and 14 touchdowns while adding a touchdown via the ground.

Hunter, one of the most electric players in college football, is the odds-on favorite to win the Heisman Trophy Award this season. Meanwhile, Hunter also helped return Colorado football to relevancy two years after posting a 1-11 record. Nevertheless, despite his unique statistical campaign, fans put Hunter and the Big 12 on blast following his conference awards:

He's not even close to having the best stats as a wide receiver. Nor is he even close to having the best stats as a defensive back.
So, what makes him Heisman worthy if he is not the best at either of his positions?

I agree, the Heisman needs to go to the best player for the position and not what your feelings tell you is the best player. Right now the back out of Boise is who I feel should get the award but just like Hunter he hasn’t played against any top rated teams as well.

As an individual who played organized sports throughout high-school and college for an individual to play both side offense and defense approximately three hours you are on the field and you contribute to your teams with catches, touchdowns, interception, and tackles that outstanding.

How many football players in college are playing like that. Yes, they might have played both in high-school but not in college. The football field is bigger, the coach won’t allow you to play, and there other talent players.

That’s talent and skills, when Hunter was recruited there was a stack of coaches offering him a scholarship because they seen how talent he has.
