The Big 12 announced its conference play schedule this morning. The Colorado Buffaloes are slated to play five new conference opponents. In a league full of “super conferences,” there will be plenty of parity in schedules from year to year. So here’s who the Buffs will face in 2025.
Week 1 – vs. Georgia Tech
The Buffs kick off 2025 with one of their toughest opponents. Georgia Tech will likely be a preseason top 25 team. The Yellow Jackets are one of the teams greatly benefitting from the NIL and transfer portal era. In a favorable location in Atlanta, and donors willing to pay for NIL, Georgia Tech is back on the rise.
This is the only power four opponent the Buffs play out of conference, but it will be a big test to see where Deion Sanders’ team stands next season.
Week 2 – vs. Delaware
The Delaware Blue Hens will be the Buffs’ FCS matchup this year. The Blue Hens play in the Colonial Athletic Association and finished with a 9-2 record in 2024. But overall this should be a cake walk for Colorado. The Buffs did struggle with their FCS opponent last season, North Dakota State, but they are an FCS powerhouse.
Week 3 – at Houston
The Houston Cougars struggled in the Big 12 in 2024, finishing with a 4-8 record. Putting Head Coach Willie Fritz on the hot seat this upcoming season. But Houston has found some success in the transfer portal, ranking fourth in the Big 12.
This won’t be an easy game like it would have been last season, but this is certainly a winnable game for Colorado.
Week 4 – vs. Wyoming
Colorado’s last non-conference opponent will be the Wyoming Cowboys back in Boulder. Overall this should serve as a “get right” game for the Buffs. Wyoming was one of the worst FBS teams last season with a 3-9 record and this should be a blow out win for Coach Prime.
Week 5 – vs. BYU
Colorado will get another crack at the BYU Cougars in an Alamo Bowl rematch. BYU beat-up on the Buffs, 36-14. And this will be another tough match-up.
Despite having the lowest-ranked transfer portal class, BYU in returning a lot of talent in 2025. BYU should be in the thick of the Big 12 title race and a playoff spot once again, the Buffs will need to play a whole lot better in September than they did in December to win this game.
Week 6 – at TCU
Coach Prime returns to Fort Worth where he coached his first game as Colorado’s head coach two season ago. In the game Colorado pulled off a stunning 45-42 victory over the Horned Frogs.
This should be a favorable matchup for the Buffs. TCU hasn’t been quite the same since their run to the National Championship in the 2022-23 season. But they are getting back on track after a 9-4 season. Unfortunately, with 14th ranked transfer class in the Big 12, the ceiling isn’t too high for the Horned Frogs.
Week 7 – vs. Iowa State
The Iowa State Cyclones continue Colorado’s tough opponents at Folsom Field. Iowa State finished 11-3 last season and they return star quarterback Rocco Becht along with other key players. It will be tough for them to replace their two star wide receivers Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel.
Matt Campbell is arguably the best coach in the Big 12, and will likely have the Cyclones competing for the Big 12 once again. This will be one of the biggest games for the Buffs in 2025.
After the matchup with the Cyclones, Colorado has it’s first bye week of the season.
Week 9 – at Utah
After being early Big 12 favorites in 2024, Utah entered into a tailspin in Big 12 play. They finished the season 4-7, while going 2-7 in Big 12 play. The new era of college football has not treated Kyle Whittingham well.
Despite Utah being near the top in both recruiting and the transfer portal in the Big 12, Utah is still projected to be in the bottom half of the conference. Colorado beat up on the Utes in 2024, but in 2025 they have to travel to Salt Like City. And even if Utah isn’t great, it is still a tough place to win.
Week 10 – vs. Arizona
Much like Utah, the Arizona Wildcats struggled in the flip from the Pac-12 to the Big 12. After an amazing conclusion to their Pac-12 tenure, Arizona went just 4-8 in 2024. That should be more of the same for them in 2025.
But the Wildcats did return their star quarterback Noah Fifita, and sometimes having a great passer is all it takes to win a game. But overall this should be a very winnable game for the Buffs.
Week 11 – at West Virginia
In recent history West Virginia has been underwhelming. But their is hope in Morgantown after the Mountaineers brought back Head Coach Rich Rodriguez, who went 60-26 during his first stint with WVU.
Rich Rod strikes hope in what has been a hopeless program, and the Mountaineers could be a sneaky Big 12 title contender even with an average roster. This could be the Buff’s toughest road test of the season.
After Colorado’s trip to West Virginia they will have their second bye of the season.
Week 13 – vs. Arizona State
After winning the Big 12 last season, Arizona State looks to carry the momentum into 2025. Head Coach Kenny Dillingham is a young star already, and he brings back his star quarterback Sam Leavitt.
If Colorado wants a shot a the Big 12, this is a must win game. Arizona State is primed for another great season, and even in Boulder, the Buffs will have their hands full with a great team.
Week 14 – at Kansas State
The Buffs close out their 2025 campaign in Manhattan against the Kansas State Wildcats. The Wildcats have been a very consistent team the past few seasons. They beat the Buffs in Boulder last season 31-28.
While struggling in the transfer portal, Kansas State has the second ranked recruiting class in the Big 12. This game will be a tough one for Coach Prime’s Buffs to win.
The Colorado Buffaloes Outlook
Colorado’s loses a handful of stars heading into the 2025 season. Not only are they losing Heisman winner Travis Hunter and quarterback Shedeur Sanders, but also players like Will Sheppard, Jimmy Horn, LaJohntay Wester, BJ Green, Chidozie Nwankwo, and Shilo Sanders.
But Colorado does have the second ranked transfer class and the fourth ranked recruiting class in the Big 12. Hopefully the Buffs will have the personnel to replace their secondary, defensive line, and entire receiver core.
It’s unknown whether transfer Kaidon Salter or Freshman Julian Lewis will start at quarterback, and just like the quarterback battle, the Buffs next year are an unknown.
This team has an incredibly high ceiling and a very low floor, and it will be a pivotal year for Coach Prime and the Colorado Buffaloes program.
