The college football world remains at a standstill ahead of spring activities. However, that does not mean social media is immune to eye-popping news, especially on the recruiting trail.
On Friday, a five-star prospect and the fourth-ranked quarterback in the 2026 recruiting class nearly broke the internet for his latest recruiting trip. Elite passer Ryder Lyons of Folsom, California, will visit the Sacramento State Hornets this weekend. A favorite to land with the USC Trojans while holding offers from the Alabama Crimson Tide, Oregon Ducks, and the Auburn Tigers, Lyons sent the college football world into a frenzy with his upcoming and unorthodox visit.

According to On3 Recruiting On Twitter:
5-star QB Ryder Lyons is visiting Sacramento State today,
Ryder Lyons, the fourth-rank quarterback prospect in the 2026 recruiting class, has been pursued by North Carolina and Bill Belichick this offseason. The Michigan Wolverines are also attempting to acquire the services of Lyons, who is most likely to sign with the USC Trojans, per 247Sports. Nevertheless, Lyons will head to Sacramento State this weekend on an unofficial visit. Lyons plays at Folsom High School in Folsom, California, less than a 20-minute drive from Sacramento State University. Also noteworthy is that Sacramento State hired former UNLV running Rebels quarterback coach Brennan Marion as their head coach entering the 2025 season. Marion is nationally known for his high-powered, speedy offenses.
Per Pete Nakos of On3 Sports, Sacramento State also has an NIL fund north of 35 million. Lyons earned 2024 Gatorade Player of the Year honors in California last season. He threw for 44 touchdowns while adding another 12 scores on the ground and could be a 2027 prospect, given his commitment to take a mission per the LDS church. With Lyons visiting Sacramento State on Friday, many fans flooded Twitter in shock given his five-star status:
“Sacramento State has also announced plans for a new stadium and has claimed to source $35 million in NIL funds from local businesses, community leaders and a local tribe.”
Wild.
