The college football world went into a frenzy last weekend, with four AP Poll Top 25 teams losing to an unranked opponent. However, despite Tennessee losing on the road against Arkansas, Michigan falling flat against Washington, and Louisville losing at home against SMU, it was the Vanderbilt Commodores that pulled off arguably the biggest win of the past decade, hanging 40 in a win over the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide.
Entering Saturday, Vanderbilt, one of college football’s least accomplished teams, owned a 0-60 record against top-five teams and had not beat Alabama in Nashville since 1969. Nevertheless, with the Commodores’ historic win, quarterback Diego Pavia has become a college football celebrity overnight, using his new star status to land NIL deals. Fans are happy for Pavia, and they are going as far as congratulating the signal-caller through his social media account.

“Vandy, we turnt!”
Vanderbilt pulled off a massive upset against the then No.1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide 40-35 in one of college football’s greatest upsets. Pavia played exceptionally during the victory, going 16-of-20 for 252 yards and two touchdowns, including a massive 36-yard scoring strike to wideout Junior Sherrill on a fourth-and-one late in the third quarter. Pavia also ran 19 times for 57 yards.
Pavia started his collegiate career with the New Mexico Military Institute, leading the team to a NJCAA National Championship in 2021. In 2022, Pavia transferred to the New Mexico State Aggies, collecting 13 passing touchdowns to six picks. Last season, the dual-threat signal-caller earned 2023 Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year, registering 2,973 yards and 26 touchdowns against nine picks. He also scampered for 923 yards and seven touchdowns across 15 games. Now, with Vanderbilt, he has posted ten total touchdowns with zero interceptions. College football fans have quickly become enamored with Pavia following last weekend’s upset win. Many fans are beaming after the dual-threat passer posted his desire to earn more NIL opportunities on social media:
This, this right here is why NIL is such a good thing.
Pavia, you deserve it all🫡
