Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick last played in the league seven seasons ago. He’s reportedly training during the NFL’s preseason to make an epic return for the 2024 season. Kaepernick isn’t thinking about practice squads, he wants to win a Super Bowl.
The 36-year-old quarterback has been spotted training in videos posted on Instagram. Last year, he sent a letter to the New York Jets asking them to let him work out for the team after Aaron Rodgers’ injury. The Jets didn’t take him up on the offer.
Colin Kaepernick might have a path back to the NFL
Kaepernick’s best chance to return to the NFL is as a member of Jim Harbaugh’s staff with the Los Angeles Chargers. He was recently photographed with Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert this summer. But Kaepernick isn’t ready to don a whistle just yet.
The former San Francisco 49ers QB is training this summer
In an interview with Sky Sports, Kaepernick said he’s still training in the hopes he can convince an owner to sign him this season:
“We’re still training, still pushing,” Kaepernick said. “So hopefully. We’ve just got to get one of these team owners to open up.”
Kaepernick was willing to start on the practice squad last year. His ambition this year is to win a Super Bowl:
“I mean, it’s something I’ve trained my whole life for.” So to be able to step back on the field would be a major moment, a major accomplishment for me. Also, I think it’s something that I could bring a lot to a team and help them win a championship.”
Kaepernick’s message is good for his brand
Kaepernick says he wants to play in the NFL. One has to think Kaepernick knows that dream is over. However, reminding the public that the NFL pushed him out seven years ago is good for his activist brand. After all, he refuses to play in the UFL.
At some point, Kaepernick will have to publicly give up his dream of becoming playing quarterback. If he wants to rejoin the NFL, he’ll have to risk his brand by trying to land a coaching job.
