It’s no secret Deshaun Watson has been struggling as the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback since the season began. According to an NFL analysis by Bleacher Report, though, the franchise should bench him if they want to become competitive again.
Despite a dismal performance, the Browns remain committed to Watson as their starting quarterback. Head coach Kevin Stefanski has repeatedly stated he has no plans to bench Watson, even as the team struggles with a 1-5 record, the worst in the league. This season, Watson has only led the team to one victory, against the similarly underperforming Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Browns are facing historic offensive challenges, scoring just one touchdown in their last 29 drives. Watson’s performance has been particularly troubling, as he has the lowest first down percentage per pass attempt among quarterbacks with over 100 attempts this season. This lack of production raises questions about the team’s direction and whether they might consider a change at quarterback to salvage the season.Stefanski’s unwavering support for Watson suggests a belief that he can still turn things around. However, fans and analysts are left wondering how long this commitment can last, especially with the prospect of tanking for a better draft position looming.
NFL Analysis Urges Cleveland Browns To Bench Deshaun Watson
At this point of the season, there’s no denying how bad Deshaun has been for Cleveland. According to Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox, the Browns should bench the quarterback right away.Would the Browns fare any better with Jameis Winston or Dorian Thompson-Robinson under center? Maybe not, but it’s worth trying to make a change. Cleveland has too talented of a roster to be playing this poorly, and it’s not as if the team didn’t watch the offense take off with Joe Flacco under center not that long ago.
The offense isn’t going to take off with this version of Watson, and it sure seems as if the Pro Bowl version will never make a return. At this point, the Browns owe it to themselves to make a change and at least find out how much of the problem Watson has been.
Watson’s performance has reached a critical point for the Browns, as he struggles to produce meaningful results. With a completion percentage of only 60% and more interceptions than touchdowns, his play has become a liability. Notably, the team failed to convert any third downs for three quarters, extending a staggering 0-26 streak.
Despite his high-profile contract and the investment made in acquiring him, many argue it’s time for the Browns to consider a benching. If Watson cannot turn things around, the team may need to explore other options to revitalize their offense.
