The Cleveland Browns were among the teams most linked to former Colorado Buffaloes star quarterback Shedeur Sanders prior to the 2025 NFL draft. But after two nights and three rounds, Sanders’ name has yet to come up, with the Browns passing on multiple opportunities to take him.
The first real shot of the Browns to take Sanders came very early in the first round, as they had the No. 2 pick overall. But Cleveland decided to trade down to the No. 5 spot with the Jacksonville Jaguars, a transaction that also netted the Browns multiple draft assets.
On Friday, the Browns took four names off the board, including a quarterback in the third round, but instead of Sanders, it was Oregon Ducks product Dillon Gabriel.
Cleveland general manager Andrew Berry shared his thoughts behind his team’s – and the rest of the league’s – skipping on Sanders through two days of the draft.
“You know what? I think it’s unfair for me to comment, on behalf of the industry,” opened up Berry about Sanders’ free fall in the draft (h/t Daryl Ruiter of 92.3 The Fan). “All I can say is this. The time that we spent with Shedeur and what he’s done throughout his college career is impressive. He’s an impressive young man. He’s a really good quarterback. Sometimes fit comes into play.”

Fans react to Cleveland Browns GM’s take on Sanders’ slide in the 2025 NFL draft
Berry’s insight has not been received well by a lot of fans, with many expressing negative reactions to it in social media.
“u notice he was about talk about when they had meetings and he seems to change his mind mid sentence”
“The fact this guy still has a job after the Deshaun Watson trade is fn crazy. He should be the day shift supervisor at his local Walmart but he still the GM of a professional franchise lol”
“Words count: sometimes fit comes into play. There it is. His attitude is a problem.”
“We all know why the Browns is always at the bottom. It’s because of bone head decision.”
“It’s a lot of words to say almost nothing”
“Unfair to comment on behalf of the industry??? What industry are we speaking of? You mean the NFL teams industry. Why would he say that? He would usually say speaking on behalf of the Browns. But industry. Seems fishy to me”
The Browns still have a shot at getting Sanders, as they will be on the clock three more times with a pick each in the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds, respectively.
