The NFL lost a legend this year when Chicago Bears Dick Butkus passed away in early October. At 80 years old, he was found unresponsive in his Malibu, California home. Until now, we have not known the cause of death but a copy of his death certificate revealed to answer.
Chicago Bears Dick Butkus Cause Of Death
TMZ Sports obtained the death certificate and it revealed that Butkust died of a stroke. An irregular heartbeat as well as ongoing issues with high cholesterol and hardened arteries were listed as secondary causes. Heart troubles were not uncommon for Butkus as he underwent coronary bypass surgery in 2001. It was a disappointing day in the NFL as Butkus was one of the greats.
A Storied Career
Butkus played for the Bears from 1965-73. He was a two-time Defensive Player of the Year winner to go along with eight Pro Bowls and eight All-Pro teams. His legendary status is cemented in the Butkus Award which is given to the top high school, college, and professional linebacker. The Bears retired his number, 51, in 1994 and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979.
The NFL lost a great one but he will definitely never be forgotten by not just the Bears but every NFL franchise.
