The Carolina Panthers drafted former Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral with the 94th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Corral participated in two of the Panthers’ NFL preseason games. He put up 69 yards on a 41.6% completion rating. The rookie quarterback suffered a significant Lisfranc injury against the New England Patriots. The injury is similar to the injury that knocked out former Panthers quarterback Cam Newton for the season a few years back. Corral was officially placed on the injured reserve on Tuesday, officially ending his season. Matt Corral released a statement (via Instagram) regarding his injury “God blessed me with an opportunity to get everything I ever wanted in life… see you soon.”
Corral wasn’t in the running to compete with Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold for the starting QB job, but the organization continued to express its support for the 2022 third-round pick. Corral will now miss a ton of practice reps in his rookie season, which could be vital in his “developmental season.” Now with Mayfield moving forward as the starter. Where do the Panthers go from there? Darnold could be moved, but it is highly unlikely due to the 18.858 million that he’s guaranteed. Corral is on the outside looking in because of the injury. QB PJ Walker has struggled in the preseason so far. It is unknown as of right now if he’ll remain on the roster come week one.

It is ironic that both QB’s have been injured in the same way.
It’s so very tragic to see a young talent injured but I do like Baker! Looking forward to watching the Panthers but really miss Cam!!
