A lot has been said about the transfer portal and NIL money, but Cam Ward is a perfect example of how it benefits college football. The star quarterback started his collegiate career at Incarnate Word where he played for two seasons. Then he transferred to Washington State for another two seasons before finally ending up in Miami for his final season. He has gone from a FCS starting QB to Heisman finalist for a top-25 ACC team.

Could Ward have made it to the NFL playing for Incarnate Word? Unlikely. What about for WSU? Sure, probably as a late round pick. But playing for Miami showed the world what Cam Ward can do, and now he’s a surefire first round pick barring a Malik Willis draft day drop. Here are what analysts think about Ward’s chances to be picked in the first round:

Analysis: “Ward seeks explosive plays and will bring a calmness to the QB position, both traits that have been desperately missing in recent years in New York. Ward has things to clean up, namely his heat check moments that can get him in trouble. Pairing Ward with the electric Malik Nabers would bring explosive plays in bunches even as Ward continues to refine his game. ”
Fox Sports– Prospect Ranking: N/A
Team: New York Giants
Position: 3
Analyst: Dalton Miller
Analysis: “Like the Titans at No. 1 overall, the Giants have an obvious need at quarterback with Drew Lock a free agent and Tommy DeVito and Tim Boyle the only others on the roster. Ward isn’t as polished as his Heisman highlights suggest but his quick release and flair for the dramatic could be big hits on Broadway.”
Sports Illustrated– Prospect Ranking: N/A
Team: Tennessee Titans
Position: 1
Analyst: Richie Bradshaw
Analysis: “Quarterback is the top need for the Titans and head coach Brian Callahan can’t wait to pick his new guy. The options are between Ward and Sanders (pending Penn State’s Drew Allar being sweet-talked into declaring early after stating he wants to return to Happy Valley next season), and Ward appears to be the favorite.
Ward isn’t everyone’s cup of tea as a true gunslinger, but it’s what makes him most exciting. The NCAA’s all-time leading touchdown passer (FCS and FBS combined) is a thrilling player who can make the Titans bearable in 2025 after this dreadful season. With some weapons around him, Tennessee could make some noise quickly in their rebuild.”
Average position: 2
Most picked team: New York Giants
