On a relatively quiet NFL Friday, the Buffalo Bills made headlines around the league for a landmark signing involving a former Olympic gold medalist. According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, Buffalo agreed to a deal with wrestler Gable Steveson, who previously competed for the University of Minnesota and Team USA.
Steveson, one of the most accomplished college wrestlers of all time, aims to join Bob Hayes as the only other gold medalist to win a Super Bowl. Hayes won gold during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics as a sprinter while winning a Super Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys. Steveson plans to play the defensive line. Buffalo’s decision to make a move for a former wrestler who has never played football before has NFL fans sharing different reactions via Twitter, also known as X.
NFL Fans: React to Buffalo Bills Signing Wrestler Gable Steveson
Gable Steveson, a five-time Olympic gold medalist and two-time college national champion, laced up a pair of football cleats for the first time during a recent tryout with the Buffalo Bills. However, on Friday, the AFC East club saw enough from the six-foot-one, 275-pound Steveson, signing him to the standard three-year rookie deal.
Gable Steveson, an Olympic gold medalist and one of the most dominant college wrestlers in NCAA history, is signing with the Bills, per his agent Carter Chow.

Steveson will try to crack the Bills’ 53-man roster while the team cut punter Matt Haack in a corresponding move. NFL fans quickly flooded social media with their reactions to the Bills adding Steveson, which is most likely an attempt to add pass-rushing help to take down superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, among others.

The Bills got an absolute freak athlete in Gable Steveson.
– He won Olympic wrestling gold at 21 years old.
– Multiple time NCAA wrestling champion.

Buffalo: Gable Steveson’s Path to Playing on the Defensive Line
With Friday’s signing of Gable Steveson, the Buffalo Bills have added three undrafted rookies to their defensive line, not including third-round draft selection DeWayne Carter. Buffalo enters 2024 with one of the best defensive line units in the league, headlined by Ed Oliver and Gregory Rousseau. The duo combined 14.5 sacks, while nose tackle DaQuan Jones also added a pair of sacks.
The Bills added Austin Johnson, Dawuane Smoot, Casey Toohill, and DeShawn Williams via free agency. Willaims posted 33 tackles last year but had only one sack with two TFLs. Meanwhile, Toohill headlines the group after a five-sack season in 2023.
