The NFL made history this afternoon, flexing its first-ever Monday Night Football game.
It’s become commonplace for the NFL to flex noon games to the afternoon slate and even to Sunday Night Football.
What happened today has never been done in Monday Night Football history.
Just minutes ago, the NFL announced its decision to move the Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks to Monday Night Football in week 15. This boots off Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce’s Chiefs, who were set to play the New England Patriots.
While surprising at first, it makes sense the more you look at it. The Kansas City Chiefs have been electric at times this year, but many agree the offense has regressed. Many point to the degradation of Kelce’s abilities while others point to the general lack of wide receiver talent.
Both are valid points and could very well be true.
On the other side, the New England Patriots have been nothing more than awful in what is likely Bill Belichick’s final year of coaching (At least in New England.) Belichick’s inability to properly scout and draft players has led to the dramatic downfall of what used to be the NFL’s most dominant roster.
In 2023 no one wants to see the Patriots in primetime, maybe not even their fans.
On the other side, flexing the Eagles to Sunday Night Football in week 15 gives them three straight stand-alone games. It’s a great move by the NFL, putting one of the most polarizing teams back in the spotlight.
At 10-1, the Eagles are looking like an unstoppable force.
The Seattle Seahawks will be trying their best to be the immovable object that meets the unstoppable force. While they’ve struggled in recent weeks, Seattle’s playoff hopes are alive and well. They’re hoping that the recent trade deadline acquisition of Leonard Williams pays off. They’ll need all the help they can get going against a stacked roster.
Seattle should be fully healthy by then and could make for an interesting challenge Dec. 18, in Seattle.
