Bo Nix reflects on his special bond with fellow Oregon alum, Justin Herbert. Now the Denver Broncos starting quarterback, Bo Nix was Auburn’s quarterback on the day he led the Tigers to win over Justin Herbert’s Oregon Ducks in the 2019 college football season. That was Nix’s freshman year, a game that put him on the national radar. Finally, it came down to a game-winning drive — one that Nix orchestrated, a touchdown pass with nine seconds left.
“It was a great head-to-head battle,” Nix said, recalling that memorable showdown. “They had a really good football team, and Justin played an incredible game.”
Fast forward to now, and Nix is the next rising star, just like Herbert has been for the Los Angeles Chargers since 2020. When Nix transferred from Auburn to Oregon for the final two years of his college career, Nix was well aware of Herbert’s accomplishments: a Pac-12 Championship and Rose Bowl win at Oregon set a high standard.
Bo Nix And Justin Herbert’s Oregon Connection
Nix and Herbert didn’t play on the same team, but they connected while they were at Oregon and Herbert would catch his younger brother, Pat Herbert, who was a tight end for the Ducks, from time to time.
“It’s not a super close relationship, but I do appreciate him coming before me,” Nix said. “He set a great example at Oregon, and now he’s been in the league for several years, doing amazing things.”
The two quarterbacks will now meet again, as professionals. Nix looks forward to the opportunity to play against Herbert once more on the NFL stage and with Herbert expected to be healthy and starting for the Chargers, it should look to be a show.
As Nix becomes more comfortable in the NFL, he’ll look for opportunities to prove himself and follow in the footsteps of Oregon greats like Justin Herbert and Marcus Mariota.
