The Chicago Bears went into the 2025 NFL Draft with a variety of needs. With the tenth overall pick, they were in a prime position to select one of the best players available at any of their positions of need, which included offensive line, pass rusher, running back, safety, and tight end.
Of course, they used that pick on Michigan tight end Colston Loveland, who had 56 receptions for 582 yards and five touchdowns last season. In 2023, the year the Wolverines won the National Championship, he had 45 receptions for 649 yards and four touchdowns.
With new head coach Ben Johnson aboard, it appears the general manager Ryan Poles was hoping to gift him a young weapon early. But Bears fans are not so sure he was the right pick.
Chicago Bears Fans Are Livid About the Colston Loveland Pick in the 2025 NFL Draft

While tight end was one of Chicago’s needs entering the 2025 NFL Draft, Loveland was not considered the best player at his position. That honor went to Tyler Warren of Penn State.
However, it was Loveland who was the first tight end off the board on Thursday night.
And while some Bears fans were happy with the pick, many others are concerned that Ryan Poles and Ben Johnson are not prioritizing the right positions early:
Bears should have traded up for Jeanty

Really interesting move by the Bears. I like Loveland, I think he’s the 2nd-best TE, and that’s the problem, especially with Tyler Warren still on the board. You also have Kmet, and defense needed more help. Given your needs, this feels like the wrong pick. C+ grade.

Terrible value. Would have still been there in the 20’s.

Insanity but that’s why they’re the Bears

Only the Bears could take a late second round TE in the top 10 of the 1st.

Chicago’s next draft selection will be in the second round with the 39th overall pick. It will be interesting to see if they look at shoring up either their offensive or defensive line with this pick, or if they will look to get Johnson and Caleb Williams another skill player.
