Auburn football will not attend the College Football Playoff in 2024, the first with a 12-team field. For the fourth straight season, Auburn went under .500 regarding win percentage, with the offense mustering just 27.8 points per game. However, one former Auburn Tigers signal-caller and Heisman Trophy Award winner made headlines on Friday for sharing his take on the current College Football Playoff standings.
On Friday, Cam Newton, Auburn football’s quarterback during the team’s last national title run, joined ESPN’s flagship show ESPN, speaking on the state of the CFP committee. Newton took exception to the current standings, believing many of the country’s top teams would struggle against the SEC and Big Ten. Nevertheless, college football fans did not hold back when they put Newton on blast.
Former Auburn Football QB Cam Newton Crushed By Fans
According to First Take via Twitter:
.@CameronNewton didn’t hold back his thoughts on the 12-team CFP format
On Friday, former Auburn football Heisman Trophy winner turned NFL MVP Cam Newton joined First Take, sharing his frustrations with the College Football Playoff committee. Newton did not hold back, saying, “Nobody wants to see SMU. Nobody wants to see Arizona State. Nobody wants to see Indiana. Nobody wants to see Boise State.” Instead, Newton pointed at the strength of schedule metric, questioning those teams that do not compete in the SEC and Big Ten. He also emphasized that he wanted to avoid seeing a TCU situation unfold as it did in the national title for the 2021 season.
Georgia beat TCU 65-7, the most lopsided CFP title game in history. However, Newton left out that TCU bested the Michigan Wolverines 51-45 in the CFP semifinals. Additionally, a former Pac-12 team, the Oregon Ducks, is leading the Big Ten, while the Texas Longhorns, formerly of the Big 12, will play in the SEC title game this weekend. College football fans did not take ex-Auburn Tigers star Cam Newton’s opinion well, bashing him via social media:
Why even play the season then? Let’s just have an SEC playoff and everybody else not named Ohio State can kick rocks. Right Cam?

Here do this let the SEC and Big10 play only out of conference teams all season. Then they will face each other in the finals with more wins as well. See easy then no conference disparity cause we already played them.

Personally I do want to see those teams. They’ve had incredible seasons, look dangerous, and are fun.

PSA: People are being picked for a PLAYOFF. Not for the national championship game. If they aren’t good enough, they will lose. No chance of a TCU-Georgia scenario if TCU loses in the first round. The playoff solves that.

So March Madness is great because there are no Cinderellas. Got it.
— DNP Chopper 🌵 (@DNP_chopper) December 7, 2024
I think I speak for everyone when I say a SMU vs Boise State Natty would set the football world ablaze like its Messi in the World Cup Final.

This guys an idiot and media is just trying to drive this narrative to justify their monopoly. Lots of people want to see those teams and more people will become fans if they get to play in the playoffs
— Ulises Gonzalez 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 (@TrulyUli) December 7, 2024
Blah blah march madness shows that upsets happen and Cinderellas develop. Playoffs shouldn’t be influenced by what ppl want to see. If the sec is the sec then they should have no problem winning it every year. Line it up!
