The Auburn football program will face off against the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday. The Auburn Tigers could be ushering in a new era, with redshirt freshman quarterback Hank Brown playing in favor of starting passer Payton Thorne. While Auburn will try to navigate the 2024 season after going 6-7 last year, former head coach Tommy Turberville, now the Senator of Alabama, is heading into the weekend remembering an elite program win from 2008.
Tuberville took to Twitter on Friday, sharing highlights from Auburn football’s epic 3-2 win against the Mississippi State Bulldogs in 2008. Auburn’s lone field goal in the second quarter was enough for the Tigers to prevail in Starkville. Tuberville was in the tenth and final season with the program when they pulled off the incredible, defensive-oriented victory.
Auburn Football Coach Tommy Tuberville Relives Epic Program Victory
Per highlights shared by the SEC Network’s Twitter game:
That time, @AuburnFootball defeated Mississippi State 3-2. It is the only football game in SEC history to finish with that score.
Tommy Tuberville replied to the short video, saying, “War Eagle.” Sitting at 2-0 and ranked inside the top ten of the AP Poll, Auburn football traveled to play the Mississippi State Bulldogs in mid-September. After nine straight punts between the two SEC squads, Auburn football received a short field, driving 39 yards on eight plays before Wes Byrum nailed a 35-yard field goal. Bynum would miss his two subsequent field goal attempts, one from 42 yards and another from 22 yards. Bulldogs kicker Adam Carlson also missed his lone field goal.
However, Bynum’s sole field goal would make the difference, with Mississippi State never finding an answer for Tommy Tuberville’s stout defense. Mississippi State went 0-for-14 on third down, totaled just 116 yards, and turned the ball over once. Their lone score came on safety against the Auburn offense. Sen’Derrick Marks, Antonio Coleman, and Jerraud Powers carried an Auburn defense that allowed 18 points per game, the 14th-lowest average in the FBS. However, Auburn limped to a 5-7 record, their worst in the Tuberville era. The Tigers mustered only 17.3 points per game, with quarterbacks Kodi Burns and Chris Todd combining for seen touchdowns against 13 picks.
