Last week, the San Francisco 49ers listed Christian McCaffrey as questionable to play the New York Jets for Monday night’s game. McCaffrey wound up missing the 49ers win over the Jets due to a calf/Achilles tendonitis injury.
Christian McCaffrey was ruled out for Week 2
On Friday, head coach Kyle Shanahan ruled out McCaffrey for the 49ers Week 2 contest against the Minnesota Vikings. But it was the next bit of information Shanahan released that isn’t good news at all for the 49ers offense.
A reporter asked Shanahan if the 49ers were considering adding McCaffrey to the injured reserve. Shanahan said the 49ers were, and that McCaffrey had his “worst day” on Thursday.
“[Thursday] was his worst day,” Shanahan said. “[The injury] is on and off, but yesterday having the most pain, was something we’re going to be discussing in the next 24 hours.”
The 49ers listed McCaffrey as questionable for Week 1
Running back Jordan Mason told ESPN’s Lisa Salters on Monday night that the 49ers suggested last Friday he’d be the starter for the 49ers against the Jets. Shanahan and the 49ers have been questioned by the media and sportsbooks for potentially trying to cheat with information on the injury report for Week 1.
Shanahan and the 49ers did not want a repeat episode this week, opting to rule out McCaffrey on Friday of this week.
McCaffrey appears to have a significant injury setback
Shanahan said on Monday night that he didn’t know last Friday if McCaffrey would be available to play the Jets. That answer, coupled with Shanahan’s answer on Friday that McCaffrey had his worst day pain-wise on Thursday, indicates McCaffrey suffered an injury setback sometime in the last week.
The 49ers wouldn’t be considering placing McCaffrey on injured reserve if they thought he was making progress in recovering from the injuries.
McCaffrey was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday and Thursday. He did not practice on Friday.
