The Atlanta Falcons, who missed the playoffs after ending their season with a 7-10 record struggled on the offensive side of the ball and have made multiple roster moves this off-season. The most recent one being the release of veteran tight end Jonnu Smith according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who played a big role in former Head Coach Arthur Smith’s scheme this past season.
The Falcons and Arthur Smith have recently parted ways and the play-calling is expected to change with the addition of Offensive Coordinator Zac Robinson. That plan apparently did not involve Jonnu Smith moving forward.
Jonnu Smith Caught 50 Passes for 582 Yards Last Season
As the Falcons secondary tight end behind number 4 overall pick Kyle Pitts, Smith was able to catch 50 passes for 582 yards and 3 touchdowns in 17 games last season. Which is the best year of his career statistically since being drafted in 2017 with the 100th overall pick.
Smith was traded to Atlanta in exchange for a 7th round pick last season in a deal with the New England Patriots and was able to make a significant impact in the pass game. He will be 28 years old heading into free agency and be looking to sign with his fourth NFL team.
Atlanta Falcons Will Save $6.5 Million in Cap Space with Smith Release
According to Over the Cap’s projections, releasing Smith will free up around $6.5 million in cap space for the 2024 season while taking a 2.5-million-dollar penalty. This will bring Atlanta’s total cap to around $38 million heading into free agency. The new league year is set to begin on March 13th. With the release of Smith, the Falcons will have Pitts, Tucker Fisk and John FitzPatrick under contract as tight ends for the club.
