After going 4-12 the season prior, the Atlanta Falcons traded up to draft Michael Vick as the first overall pick in the 2001 NFL draft. Vick would play six seasons with the Atlanta Falcons and ultimately reshape the Quarterback position. Today we are going to talk about his impact on the field for the Atlanta Falcons and the lasting impact he has had on the game of football.
His Time With The Atlanta Falcons
In his rookie season, Michael Vick saw some action on the field but played a limited role behind veteran QB Chris Chandler. In 2002 Vick was named the Atlanta Falcons’ starting QB. That same year, he started 15 games and threw 231 completions for 2936 yards. He displayed versatility that no QB showed before him by also rushing for 777 yards. The position of QB would never be the same.
During his six seasons with the Falcons, Vick would become the face of the franchise. He ended up with a 39-34-1 record with the Falcons and led the team to two playoff appearances. Many fans regard him as one of the best QBs to ever play the game, and rightfully so.
Awards and Accolades
Michael Vick is one of the most athletic QBs to ever play the game, which has allowed him to break numerous records in his career. He was a three time Pro-Bowler, and currently holds the NFL records for career YPC and career rushing yards. Until 2013 Vick also held the record for most rushing yards in a game by a Qb with 173.
A Lasting Legacy
There is no doubt that Michael Vick is one of the most versatile athletes to play the sport. Though his career with the Atlanta Falcons was tragically cut short, there is an argument to be made that Vick is one of the best QBs to play for the Atlanta Falcons. His work on the field has inspired generations of athletes and even transformed how the game of football is played today. Number seven is a Falcons legend.
“You never know what I’m going to do. You never know if I’m going to throw the ball or if I’m going to run the ball, which makes me a double threat, which makes me more dangerous”-Michael Vick
