Ashton Jeanty has had an amazing season this season from record-breaking performances, Heisman poses and plays that will be remembered throughout history. And guess what? He’s not done yet either. This season, Ashton Jeanty carried the ball 344 times for 2,497 yards, and 29 touchdowns, averaging 7.3 yards per carry.
Many say Jeanty is the best running back in college football and fans would agree with that statement. Against the then 7th ranked (Now number 1) Oregon Ducks, Ashton rushed for 195 yards and 3 touchdowns on 25 carries. He’s had a historic season for a running back and it hasn’t stopped there. Ashton won the Maxwell Award, Doak Walker Award, Consensus All American, Mountain West player of the Year.
It seems like Ashton Jeanty has been chasing legends as he’s drawn many comparisons to legendary Detroit Lions and former Oklahoma State running back Barry Sanders. In Barry’s 1988 Heisman season, he rushed for 2,628 yards which is a single season record. Ashton Jeanty isn’t far behind and has the college football playoff to catch Barry Sanders’ rushing feat in totality.
The Heisman:
Ashton Jeanty placed 2nd in the Heisman Trophy voting with 309 first place votes but he won the popularity vote in the polls. It was a very close Heisman race, and Colorado’s Travis Hunter was awarded the trophy, and it was well deserved. But a lot of people feel like Jeanty deserved the award as well, which is fair.
Ashton Jeanty was disappointed and expressed his feelings to KBTV after the ceremony according to Sports Illustrated saying, “Obviously it wasn’t the result I was hoping for, I kind of just had to take a moment to debrief and just appreciate the fact that I was even here, I really felt like I should’ve walked away with the award, but kudos to Travis for winning.” Full Sports illustrated article: Ashton Jeanty on Heisman Trophy: ‘I Should’ve Walked Away With the Award’
College Football Playoff:
Boise State has the number 3 seed in the College Football Playoff, and they will face either Penn State or SMU in the Fiesta Bowl on December 31st, 2024. Ashton Jeanty led the Boise State Broncos to an AP #9 ranking, Mountain West Championship and College Football Playoff berth.
He’ll have a tough task ahead of him if Boise State faces Penn State as the Nittany Lions have the 9th ranked rushing defense in college football or SMU as they have the 4th ranked rushing defense.
Ashton Jeanty will have something to prove in these playoffs and will be looking to show the doubters why he thinks he deserved to be the 2024 Heisman Trophy Winner as the Broncos start their journey to the National Championship.
