To say this offseason has been a whirlwind for Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals is an understatement.  Murray will start 2023 on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ACL late last season.

Much has been made about the Cardinals’ off-season decisions as well.  Most notably, Arizona traded away the 8th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Isaiah Simmons, to the New York Giants for a 2024 seventh round draft pick.  There have also been rumors that the Cardinals may choose to sit Kyler Murray the entire season to ensure a top a draft pick in 2024.  However, that isn’t the case according to head coach Jonathan Gannon.

Kyler Murray Named Team Captain, Will Play In 2023 According To Arizona Cardinals Head Coach Jonathan Gannon

Head Coach Jonathan Gannon commented on who the six captains will be for the Cardinals in 2023 and what their plans will be for QB Kyler Murray:

Despite rumors and speculation, the Cardinals have no plans to sit QB Kyler Murray for the 2023 season, per Kyle_Odegard.

He was just named a team captain and the plan is to get him back on the field as soon as possible. He has “hit it off” with new head coach Jonathan Gannon.

In addition to Kyler Murray, Kyzir White, D.J. Humphries, James Conner, Budda Baker, and Dennis Gardeck were all named team captains.

“He’s our franchise quarterback and everything that I want for our captains to be, he demonstrates it,” said Gannon when asked specifically about Murray. Arizona’s quarterback will miss at least the first four weeks of the season after remaining on the PUP list. A timetable for his return is currently unknown.

This is certainly good news for Cardinals fans as many speculated that 2023 could be a “tank for Caleb Williams” type of year.  Through 4 seasons in the NFL Murray has accumulated 13,848 passing yards, 84 passing touchdowns, 41 interceptions, and a 66.8 completion percentage.

Murray has also rushed 381 times for 2,204 yards, and 23 touchdowns.  If his time in Arizona doesn’t pan out the way he would like, he will certainly garner a lot of interest around the league.
