The Ohio State Buckeyes entering the 2025 college football season will once again have a different starting quarterback. Three quarterbacks on the Buckeyes roster for the 2025 season will be Julian Sayin, Lincoln Kienholz, and freshman Tavien St. Clair.

St. Clair is an incoming freshman for Ohio State, and he is a five-star recruit. Entering the 2025 season, head coach Ryan Day has St. Clair as the third quarterback on the depth chart and Sayin and Kienholz competing for the starting job. Sayin of Kienholz might be the starter for the 2025 season, but St. Clair no doubt could be the future starting quarterback for the Buckeyes football program.
Ohio State Buckeyes Freshman Tavien St. Clair 1 Of 8 Non-Starters On Roster To Watch Out For In 2025

Cameron Teague Robinson of The Athletic wrote about eight players on Ohio State’s roster who will not be starting in 2025, but will either be a key role player or future star in the future for this football program. One name Robinson mentioned on his list was the freshman quarterback St. Clair. This is not a surprise because some thought he was maybe going to compete for the starting job right away.
There is no doubt that he will see some game action in 2025 in blowouts for the Buckeyes. Robinson said,
“With the quarterback battle still going on between Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz, let’s dig down the depth chart with an eye toward the future. I’m excited to see St. Clair in spots this season because he has all the tools to be a game-changer.
A five-star recruit from Bellefontaine, Ohio, who enrolled for the spring, St. Clair already looks the part at 6 feet 4 and 225 pounds, and it’s the way he moves that stands out when watching him. He runs well in and out of the pocket, and though he still has to catch up to the speed and mental side of the college game, there’s enough there to be excited about.
Even if Sayin and Kienholz take the top two spots on the depth chart, St. Clair should get some reps to get some experience in front of big crowds. The question will be whether he’s limited to four games to save a redshirt, which is what happened with Sayin last season.
Regardless, St. Clair has a chance to be the future at Ohio State, so he’ll draw plenty of eyes whenever he does step on the field.”
It might be smart for the Buckeyes to redshirt St. Clair, but it will depend on how either Sayin or Kienholz will look during the first four games of the 2025 college football season. Ohio State will face the Texas Longhorns in Week 1 of the 2025 college football season at Buckeyes Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
The Michigan Wolverines are leaning toward starting freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood in 2025. This is why it is a little surprising that Ohio State is not leaning toward starting St. Clair right away. However, if Sayin and Kienholz both struggle to start the season, the fans maybe calling for him to start at some point. If St. Clair is not the starter at any point in 2025, there is a better chance that he will be the starter for Ohio State in 2026.
